Panel fencing is a good call inland - Mill Hill, Sholden, Great Mongeham, most of the CT14 back-garden boundaries between mid-C20th houses. It is the cheapest way to replace a tired boundary run, it is quick to install once the posts are set, and if a single panel takes a knock it is a five-minute job to swap.
Overlap versus waneyedge versus tongue-and-groove
Overlap panels are the budget default. Thin horizontal boards ply-and-batten style, the cheapest option, and the shortest lifespan on the coast - an overlap panel in a Kingsdown clifftop garden might last five years before the batten pulls out. Waneyedge is the next step up: thicker overlapping boards, wavy top rail, a much longer expected life. Tongue-and-groove is the premium: solid vertical boards machined together, no batten, the same face both sides. On any back garden facing an easterly-open aspect I recommend tongue-and-groove over overlap every time.
Concrete-post runs are non-negotiable
Any new panel-fence run I install goes into concrete morticed posts and concrete gravel boards. Timber posts on Deal boundaries fail at the ground line and take the panels down with them; a concrete-post run keeps the panels off the wet ground and lets you swap out a damaged panel without touching the posts. Post depths are 600mm standard and 750mm on Kingsdown clifftop plots. Chalk substrate on the Ringwould side gets augered post-holes.
How pricing works
Quoted from photos, supplied and fitted at 1.8m height on concrete posts and gravel boards. Overlap is the cheapest grade, waneyedge sits above that, tongue-and-groove is the premium option. Straight replacement of an existing panel run - same posts, new panels - is quoted per-panel depending on grade.
Where it works and where it does not
Panel fencing works on any Mill Hill, Sholden or Great Mongeham estate garden. It works on Ripple's larger inland plots. It works on non-front-facing Walmer boundaries. It does not work on Kingsdown clifftop - the wind lift on any panel face is worse than closeboard, and overlap panels in particular will not survive an easterly. Beach-front and seafront jobs go closeboard or cedar-clad, not panel.
